August 9 is just around the corner! Before we know it, the stirring tunes of past and present National Day Parade (NDP) theme songs will be serenading us at every turn. After all, what’s National Day without feel-good melodies that inspire hope and unity? Without further ado, let’s jump right into 5 catchy NDP theme songs we can teach children!
1. We Are Singapore (1987)
Composed by Hugh Harrison (who is also behind the iconic Stand Up for Singapore and Count on Me, Singapore ), the chorus was inspired by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s speech to principals of school principals in 1966 . In the speech, he stated his wish for a community that “responds together: this is my country, this is my flag; this is my President; this is my future. I am going to protect it.” in the face of adversity. In addition, the entirety of the national pledge makes up the song’s bridge, making it the perfect NDP theme song that engages and educates.
2. Home (1998)
Being around for more than two decades now, this tune might be more melancholic than other NDP theme songs but continues to be fiercely popular with the masses. Written by composer Dick Lee and first performed by Kit Chan in 1998, the relatable classic has since been performed many times over the years and remains as well-received as ever. When children listen to the song for the first time, they will likely experience the same feelings as most Singaporeans do: nostalgia, comfort and appreciation for the sanctuary we call home.
3. Where I Belong (2001)
Upon its release, this song was an immediate hit with many Singaporeans with its smooth and melodious tune. Containing rousing lines such as “I want the whole world to know, I want to shout it out loud that this is where I know I belong”, it is easy to elicit excitement in children who will likely sing (or shout) these lyrics written by Tanya Chua.
4. Reach Out For The Skies (2005)
Energetic and upbeat, this NDP song is one many can still recognise upon hearing the opening notes today. Featuring a relatively easy choreography for children to follow and uplifting lyrics, it will be a hit amongst children who will have fun dancing and singing along!
5. In a Heartbeat (2011)
Bursting with sentimentality, this tune by Sylvia Ratonel comes across as a love song more than a patriotic one. Without ever mentioning “Singapore” in its lyrics, the song nevertheless carries forth its message perfectly- every Singaporean has an invaluable role to fulfil and the importance of being there for one another. The harmonious chorus is a plus, making it simple for children to pick up just in time for National Day!
